The National Conciliation and Mediation Board (NCMB) in collaboration with the Philippine League of Labor  Management Cooperation Practitioners, Inc. (PHILAMCOP) launched the Search for 2009 LMC Awards for Industrial Peace on March 17, 2009 at the Imperial Palace Suites in Timog Avenue cor. Tomas Morato, Quezon City.

The contest runs from March to November 2009.

The Search for Outstanding LMC Awards for Industrial Peace is a biennial undertaking of the NCMB and the PHILAMCOP. It aims to give recognition to Labor Management Councils/Committees that have greatly improved labor relations within the company resulting in increased productivity, workers’ job satisfaction and the company’s good business performance.

Unlike in previous years, this year’s Search includes the unorganized sector in recognition of the Project’s goal to enhance advocacy for workplace cooperation and partnership.

Winners in the Search will receive their awards during the 7th LMC National Convention in Cebu City on November 27-28, 2009.

In his welcome message, NCMB Executive Director Reynaldo R. Ubaldo said that the launching of the search is timely because of the expected impact of the global financial crisis on the Philippine economy. He expounded on the importance of LMCs and encouraged the replication of LMC good practices to be shared with other enterprises, especially the struggling ones to enable them to sustain their existence and preserve jobs which would eventually give the economy its much needed push.

He said further that LMCs are not intended to supplant unionism as perceived by some but rather complement and strengthen the partnership between labor and management.

Mr. Nestor Z. Flores, Treasurer of PHILAMCOP, conveyed his gratitude to the NCMB for supporting PHILAMCOP in all its undertakings.  He said that the search for outstanding LMC award has gone a long way since its inception in 1998, serving as gauge of true cooperation between labor and management.

In his inspirational message, DOLE Undersecretary Romeo C. Lagman emphasized that LMC should be set up in all companies in the country.  He noted that the presence of LMCs resulted in fewer disputes in the workplace and fewer cases are filed at DOLE offices as workers and employers are able to thresh out their differences thru LMC.

He also noted the role of the Philippine Association on Labor-Management Cooperation (PHILAMCOP) in pushing for the program. He challenged the social partners to reinvent LMCs in the midst of the present global financial crisis and assured the partners of the support of DOLE.

The event also featured a presentation by the Central Azucarera Don Pedro, Inc. (CADPI), a Hall of Famer in the 2007 Outstanding LMC Awards, on how their LMC transformed the labor relations situation in the company from adversarial to collaborative.

The mechanics of the search as well as nomination forms can be accessed thru the NCMB website (www.ncmb.ph) and can be readily obtained from NCMB Regional Branches nationwide.
